Want to help me paint my next murals in National Landing, Arlington, VA?
Hi!
I am looking for 6-8 GW student (current and former) volunteers to help me paint my next 2 murals in Arlington, VA!
- What: my newest set of (twin) murals called "The Sun & The Moon"
- When: On Saturday, August 29* and on Sunday, August 30
- Slots: you can sign up for one slot or more or all. Signing up for all the slots is encouraged. Please, let me know beforehand if you intend to change your reservation so I can fill that slot with another volunteer.
- Where: The retaining walls of the Route 1 Highway underpass where it crosses over 12th St S (approximatively located at 420 12th St S in Arlington, Virginia, 5 minutes walk from Crystal/City/National Landing metro).
- Job: Saturday 29 is the first day of the project so volunteers will be assisting me starting day one with these twin murals. I expect that most Saturday will be spent wall and site prepping, and painting the walls a black underpaint. Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning we will start tracing the landscape lines and the rays with chalk and the building silhouettes with carbon paper. On Sunday, August 30th afternoon from 2pm to 4pm we will be hosting "community painting day" with residents who have signed up beforehand. On "community painting day" both local residents and volunteers will trace and paint buildings and landmarks in the mural.
- What to bring/to wear: muraling is a dirty job in dirty spaces :) The area has recently been abated and spray washed by the National Landing BID, however, you will get dirty so wear only clothes and shoes you are happy getting paint on that will NOT come off. Also, bring your own water bottle so as to limit the use of single-use plastic. All other supplies (e.g. paints, brushes, chalk, carbon paper) will be available for use on site.
- Photography and social media: by agreeing to volunteering on this project you will also agree to be in pictures and videos that will be used by the artists and project partners for social media and outreach. You are encouraged to also share your own videos and photos of your experience on your own social media.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
**** The start date could shift to Saturday, September 5 if the County permits are delayed. If you sign up for August 29 and 30 and the project shifts date you will not be expected to make the new dates.
*Liability waver: although we will take precautions and safety measures to keep everyone safe and happy during the project, you will be expected to sign a liability waiver (in person when you first show up) or you will not be able to take part in the mural painting.
